This commission was won when ZAP won an international anonymous architectural competition advertised in the Architects Journal. ZAP came out on top of esteemed international architectural practices to snatch the chance to design and build his €1m sculptural entrance marking the main entrance to Dublin City University in Ireland.
“The design celebrates the main entrance to DCU, creating an intriguing forest of verticals which graduate from humble beginnings to a taller and austere rigidness at the public threshold of the campus. The scheme was inspired by the Irish proverb ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’ or ‘there is no strength without unity’. The adjacent building on the other side of the entrance has been sliced by horizontal shafts of light spelling out the letters ‘D-C-U’ in ancient ogham script. The scheme is about place-making, about creating a striking and memorable visual identity for the university, both locally and around the world”.
